John + Harrison is a British watchmaker. He created the first mechanical clock with enough precision to measure longitude, which was necessary for ocean-going voyages. He was born in Fallby, near Wakefield, Yorkshire, the son of a woodworker and carpenter. When he was six years old, while recovering from smallpox, he was fascinated by the movement of a clock his father gave him.
